Ex-Darragh Morgan; A Fine Irish Violin by Thomas Perry, Dublin, circa 1770

Descended most likely from French Maker Claude Pierray, Thomas Perry operated a hugely successful workshop on Anglesea Street in Dublin's Temple Bar, initially independently, then from 1781 alongside his son-in-law William Wilkinson, thenceforth trading under the banner of Perry & Wilkinson. 

His instruments, which are very popular with players and are displayed in many collections worldwide, tend to be modelled on the work of Amati (he is thought to have been able to study the dimensions of the Amati belonging to the Duke of Leinster and based his instruments primarily on this pattern), though some are redolent of the work of Richard Duke of London. He also notably trained or employed many other makers of renown, such as Richard Tobin, John Delaney, and Vincenzo Panormo during his time in Dublin.

This violin has, until recently, formed part of a collection of instruments belonging to renowned international soloist and recording artist Darragh Morgan, who is keen to see an instrument with its origins in Dublin find a new home here.
